Description:

The old location of Valmeyer, IL was located in the Mississippi River floodplain and was at risk for flooding. Monroe County decided to move the town and this GIS layer represents the location data for parcels in the new Valmeyer, IL location. This GIS layer shows parcel property boundaries and locations including data for minimum, maximum and mean elevation and slope for each parcel. This GIS layer also features mean distance of each parcel from the old Valmeyer town location.

Geoprocessing and data acquisition:

The GIS parcel feature class that was used as the base for this GIS layer was provided by the UC Davis Specialization course through Coursera. It is unclear what date and from where the original GIS parcel feature class was received. After receiving the GIS parcel feature class, the following was conducted by Angelica Amesquita to append the data on March 20 and 21, 2024.

Digital elevation model (DEM) raster data for parcels at 10m x 10m cell sizes were provided by the UC Davis GIS Specialization program for this assignment. The DEM_10m raster data was resampled for 5m x 5m cell sizes (DEM_5m) in order to obtain mean, minimum and maximum elevation data for each parcel. Mean, minimum and maximum elevation data, measured in meters, for parcels was calculated using the Zonal Statistics as Table geoprocessing tool. These data were added to the parcel layer using the Add Join feature, joining with parcel Object IDs.

The DEM_5m raster data was also used to generate a Slope_5m raster for the parcels. The slope raster was represented in degrees and was used to calculate mean, maximum and minimum degree slope data for each parcel using the Zonal Statistics as Table geoprocessing tool. These data were added to the parcel layer using the Add Join feature, joining with parcel Object IDs.

The mean distance of each parcel (move_dist), measured in meters, to the old Valmeyer location was calculated using the Euclidean Distance geoprocessing tools. In this analysis, the maximum distance was set to 5000, an output cell size of 10m, and the "Snap Raster" and "Extent" environmental variables were set to the DEM_10m raster data. These data were resampled at 5m and were then added to the parcel layer using the Add Join feature, joining with parcel Object IDs.
