Service Description: The North American Power Plants map displays over 3,000 power-generating facilities using fossil fuel sources in 2005. These facilities are classified based on the primary source of fuel used to generate electricity: oil, natural gas, coal, or other fuels. Each map illustrates the emissions of a specific pollutant from the facilities (SO2, NOX, Hg, PM2.5, PM10, and CO2). These maps were developed for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s 2011 publication, North American Power Plant Air Emissions.

Description: This data set shows the locations of more than 3,000 North American power-generating facilities using fossil fuel sources, and includes information on each plant’s primary fuel; the generating capacity; and the air emissions of SO2, NOx, Hg, PM2.5, PM10, CH4, N2O, and CO2. The data were assembled primarily from the three North American countries’ national emission inventories: the National Pollutant Release Inventory (NPRI) in Canada; the National Emissions Inventory of Mexico (INEM), which is compiled from publicly available databases and reports; and the EPA emissions and Generation Resource Integrated Database (eGRID2007) and the EPA 2005 National Emissions Inventory (NEI) in the United States. These data were developed for the Commission for Environmental Cooperation’s 2011 publication: North American Power Plant Air Emissions
Fossil fuels are the main energy source used for electricity generation in North America; they are used to produce almost two-thirds of the electricity consumed.
The data used to create these maps were provided by multiple agencies from each country.
