Please see <a href="https://sdsn.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=cbe2a051a6a84a8fbe681dc97dff59d0#overview" target="_blank">sdgstoday.org</a><br /></span></b></font></div><div><br /></div><div><p style="margin: 0in;"><span style="background-image: initial; background-position: initial; background-size: initial; background-repeat: initial; background-attachment: initial; background-origin: initial; background-clip: initial;"><span style="font-size: 11pt;">The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) works with the European Commission to support the global monitoring of freshwater ecosystems, as reported through the </span><a href="https://www.sdg661.app/" target="_blank">Freshwater Ecosystems Explorer</a><span style="font-size: 11pt;">, which provides up-to-date geospatial data on changes to their extent and water quality. The Trophic State Index (TSI) refers to the accumulation of organic matter in a water body and is used to monitor eutrophication (excessive nutrients in a body of water which can result in harmful algal blooms, depletion of oxygen levels, and death of wildlife), and infer water quality. The TSI is derived from phytoplankton biomass by proxy of chlorophyll-a. Monthly measurements of trophic state are produced by the </span><a href="https://land.copernicus.eu/global/products/lwq" target="_blank">Copernicus Global Land Service </a><span style="font-size: 11pt;">for 2019 and cover 4,265 lakes globally (300x300m pixels). For each pixel and month, the deviation from a baseline reference period is calculated. These monthly deviations are then classified as ‘low’ (0-25%), ‘medium’ (25-50%), ‘high’ (50-100%), or ‘extreme’ (100%+). The final values represent the proportion of each lake in each of these categories for a given month.
