Description: This feature class/shapefile represents the seven regional transmission organization (RTO) boundaries and their associated regions, hubs, and zones in the United States. Regional transmission organizations also known as RTOs are entities that oversee wholesale electricity markets and are responsible for ensuring the markets operate efficiently under a variety of conditions to ensure electricity is supplied and demand is served across their market region. Note that RTOs do not all have well-defined geographical boundaries. As a result, the RTO shapefiles sometimes overlap each other and sometimes have gaps in geographic coverage. The geographic shapefiles provide a rough idea of the extent of coverage for each RTO; and are not meant to represent strict boundaries.
