Description: This dataset depicts the Special Areas as portrayed on maps in the National Petroleum Reserve in Alaska's planning efforts.The NPRPA authorized the Secretary of the Interior to identify areas in the NPR-A “containing any significant subsistence, recreational, fish and wildlife, historical, or scenic value.” Any exploration in these areas shall be conducted in a manner which will “assure the maximum protection of such surface values to the extent consistent with the requirements of the Act for exploration of the reserve” (42 USC § 6504). Federal regulations state that such values may be protected by limiting, restricting, or prohibiting the use of and access to appropriate lands in the NPR-A, including, but not limited to, rescheduling activities and use of alternative routes, types of vehicles and loading, limited types of aircraft in combination with minimum flight altitudes and distances from identified places, and special fuel handling procedures (43 CFR §§ 2361.1(c) and 2361.1(e)(1)).
