Description: In the spring and summer of 2021, staff from the Connecticut Department of Agriculture Bureau of Aquaculture, Connecticut Sea Grant and the University of Connecticut, began conducting qualitative surveys of intertidal oyster habitat at sites across Connecticut. The team met with local subject matter experts including municipal shellfish and harbor management commissions, commercial shellfish harvesters, and town officials to gather descriptive environmental data, human dimensions data, photographs and intel on the communities’ perspectives on restoration activities on their coastlines. Surveys were conducted in 15 coastal towns, with a total of 68 sites from Greenwich in the west to Stonington in the east. The sites surveyed are known to be current and historically important oyster areas based on historic maps and conversions with subject matter experts. This work is ongoing.
The purpose of these surveys was to establish baseline data on the condition of habitat, a statewide exercise that has not until this time been accomplished. These data, and the photos, can serve to provide a baseline for restoration practitioners to gauge progress if and when those sites are selected for shellfish restoration projects.
The site surveys collected the following information:
Town and site name
Precise site GPS coordinates
Waterbody
General site description
Designation (i.e., designated natural bed; undesignated natural bed; recreational bed; commercial bed)
Tide level (i.e., intertidal; subtidal)
Water depth
Substrate type (i.e., mud; sand; shell; gravel; mix)
Eastern oyster abundance (absent; non-reef; low -density reef; high -density reef)
Ribbed mussel abundance (absent; non-reef; low -density reef; high -density reef)
History of industry use (e.g., year(s); type of activity (e.g., harvest, planting shell))
Shellfish classification (prohibited; restricted; conditional; approved)
Numerous photos were taken at each site as well
