Service Description: Like all who came to Jacksonville in the 1850s, Chinese
immigrants first came in search of gold. The
Chinese Quarter was comprised of a cluster of no
more than two dozen expediently built wooden buildings
from the city’s early days, made available when
much of Jacksonville’s commerce migrated north to
California Street. The bustling Chinese neighborhood
contained stores, a doctor, a barber, gamblers, carpenters,
laundries, hotels and boarding houses.
