Please cite "USDA Forest Service, Forest Health Protection and its partners" as the source of this data in maps and publications.***Prior to 2016 the SURVEYED_AREAS layer was not created as part of the standard ADS data protocol. Prior to this time the area NOT_FLOWN was recorded and stored within the DAMAGE_AREAS layer as a polygon with NO DAMAGE. In 2021, the R6 ADS Program worked with R6 Data Resources Management to standardize the past surveys into the current data schema and data format. A series of scripts were used to transcribe the old surveys into the new data schema as well as separate out the NOT_FLOWN layer from the DAMAGE_AREAS. The last step in this process was to create SURVEYED_AREAS for all past years. Prior to 2005 the NOT_FLOWN area was inconsistently recorded. For years where NOT_FLOWN was recorded, we used those data to estimate the SURVEYED_AREAS for each year by removing the NOT_FLOWN portions from the updated R6_ADS_SurveBoundaryGeneralized and manually ensuring all reported DAMAGE_AREAS were covered. To maintain the integrity of what was recorded in the past we did not re-create missing NOT_FLOWN layers. For years with a partially complete NOT_FLOWN layer we used the information provided in the survey records and filled in the portions of the Willamette Valley that are currently omitted from under our current survey plan.For years with a minimal or NULL NOT_FLOWN layer, these NOT_FLOWN layers left unedited in the dataset. We then used alternate methods to estimate the SURVEYED_AREAS for each of these years. This was primarily an issue from 1980-1994, and 1968. Prior to conducting that estimate, a search was performed of the remaining R6 ADS hardcopy and microfiche maps and records. We also interviewed Ben Smith, former ADS Program Manager. Based on those inquiries we concluded that more complete records of these past ADS Surveys no longer exist. Previous attempts to locate all of this information were conducted when these data were initially digitized and the hardcopy survey maps were sent for microfiche backup then disposal. A later attempt to scan and catalog the microfiche records and remaining maps yielded similar results. Methods: Data collected between 2015 and 1995 generally provided sufficient NOT_FLOWN data to reasonably estimate the SURVEYED_AREAS. This was done by removing NOT_FLOWN from the R6_SurveyBoundaryGeneralized layer and then manually checking to see that all DAMAGE_AREAS were included. Data collected Prior to 1995 varied considerably in what NOT_FLOWN data were recorded. If NOT_FLOWN Data were available and complete for a year, we used the same process as the 2015-1995 data. For years with missing or incomplete NOT_FLOWN data, we chose to estimate the SURVEYED_AREAS by buffering all recorded DAMAGE_AREAS by 10 miles and then merging those buffers into a single polygon. Minimal manual editing was then done to remove minor slivers and any NOT_FLOWN portions if those data existed.
