Deforestation is a grave threat to biodiversity and the future of sustainable development. Forests play a key role in reducing the risk of natural disasters, balancing carbon dioxide and oxygen in the air, and providing habitat for many living species. &lt;a href='https://www.globalforestwatch.org/' style='color:rgb(0, 121, 193); text-decoration-line:none; font-family:inherit;' target='_blank' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'&gt;Global Forest Watch&lt;/a&gt; (GFW) provides data and tools for monitoring forests and provides access to near real-time information about where and how forests are changing around the world. &lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style='font-family:inherit;'&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;/div&gt;&lt;div style='font-family:inherit;'&gt;This dataset was created by the University of Maryland’s &lt;a href='https://glad.geog.umd.edu/' style='color:rgb(0, 121, 193); text-decoration-line:none; font-family:inherit;' target='_blank' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'&gt;GLAD&lt;/a&gt; (Global Land Analysis &amp;amp; Discovery) lab and is supported by &lt;a href='https://www.globalforestwatch.org/' style='color:rgb(0, 121, 193); text-decoration-line:none; font-family:inherit;' target='_blank' rel='nofollow ugc noopener noreferrer'&gt;GFW&lt;/a&gt; and measures the number of GLAD deforestation alerts, area of deforestation (hectares), and above ground carbon loss (t CO2). It is the first satellite-based (Landsat) alert system for tree cover loss. Tree cover is defined as all vegetation greater than five meters in height with greater than 60% canopy cover, and can take the form of natural forests or plantations. The alerts have a 30-meter resolution and are operational for land areas between 30 degrees north and south.
